Small Parts of NW Oklahoma Remain Abnormally Dry

DroughtMay2016The latest Drought Monitor report for Oklahoma shows less than 2 percent of the state is in the classification of ‘moderate drought’ and 12 percent is abnormally dry.

Gary McManus, State Climatologist at the Oklahoma Mesonet indicated that recent rains made improvements in most of the state. While 88 percent of the state is clear of any dry conditions, a year ago only 29 percent had plenty of rain.

A year ago, 71 percent of the state was in abnormally dry conditions.

The next category is moderate drought and only 1.67 percent is listed, according to the Drought Monitor. Currently there is no section of Oklahoma in the Extreme Drought category and none in the worst classification, Exception Drought. But one year ago, 59 percent of the state was in the Moderate Drought, 18 percent in the Extreme Drought and 4 percent in the Exceptional Drought category.
