Texas Tops the Baker Hughes Rig Count, Adding 15 Rigs

The U.S. rig count surged by 15 to 462, according to the Baker Hughes weekly rig count released on Friday. Oil rigs were up by 14 to 371, with gas rigs down by one to 88 and miscellaneous rigs up by two to three.

Leading the pack with the largest gain in North America, Texas added 15 rigs last week, bringing the cumulative number of active rigs to 217. A year ago, Texas had 374 rigs.

Oklahoma remains unchanged at 59 rigs, down nearly half from last year’s count of 107.

California gained two rigs while Louisiana lost two active rigs for the week.

Overall, the U.S. rig count remains down by 414 from last year’s count of 876, according to Baker Hughes. A breakdown reflects oil rigs down 288, gas rigs down 128 and miscellaneous rigs up by two since last year.

The U.S. offshore rig count sits at 19, down three from last week. Overall, U.S. offshore rigs are down 12 since last year.

Canada is up seven rigs to 102. This accounts for an increase of four oil rigs to 48 and three gas rigs to 53 while miscellaneous rigs remain unchanged at one.

Overall, the Canadian rig count is down 98 rigs from last year’s count of 200. According to the report, Canadian oil rigs are down by 50, gas rigs are down by 49 and miscellaneous rigs are up by one since last year.

The Permian basin, covering West Texas and a small portion of southeastern New Mexico, saw an increase of eight rigs for a current total of 168, but is still down when compared with the 245 rigs from last year.

The Barnett basin, covering north central Texas, saw an increase of three rigs for a current total of eight, which is equal to last year’s rig count.

Northeastern Colorado’s DJ-Niobrara rig count also increased by two last week to 18 but remains below the 31 rigs which were operating last year.

The Eagle Ford shale play in south Texas’ western gulf basin saw an increase of two rigs. Eagle Ford operates 35 rigs, down from last year’s count of 100.
