Devon Energy Corporation’s co-founder and chairman emeritus, Larry Nichols, will be honored with the Eugene Kuntz Award at the University of Oklahoma College of Law’s annual conference on natural resources law and policy on November 4.

The award recognizes Nichols’ many contributions to the energy industry, particularly oil and gas law.

“We are thrilled to honor Larry Nichols with this year’s Kuntz Award,” said Joseph Harroz Jr., OU Law Dean. “His contributions to the energy industry and the state of Oklahoma are unmatched and his impressive work in the legal field sets him apart as truly deserving of an honor worthy of the great Eugene Kuntz.”

Nichols earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his juris doctorate from the University of Michigan. He served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Earl Warren and Justice Tom Clark of the United States Supreme Court. He also served as Special Assistant to Assistant Attorney General William H. Rehnquist.

Nichols co-founded Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy Corporation in 1971. He served as the energy company’s president from 1976 to 2003 and as its chief executive officer from 1980 to 2010. He also served on Devon’s board of directors from 1971 to 2016 and as executive chairman of the board from 2000 to 2016.

In honor of Eugene Kuntz, a former OU Law dean and noted oil and gas professor, the award is bestowed annually at the conference which is hosted by OU Law and the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Energy and Natural Resources Section.
