Whether GE and its new Oklahoma City Oil and Gas Research Center will one day be in partners with Baker Hughes is one thing.,

But the Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch reports the two are in talks to former a merger—-GE’s oil-and-gas business with the Houston based company.

GE is the one that went asking, approaching the oil-field-services company about a deal. Market Watch hasn’t been able to learn many details of the merger talks. But the talks are confirmed after the proposed merger between Baker Hughes and Halliburton turned into a fiasco.

But the newspaper speculates such a deal could be worth close to $20 billion and could be structured that GE would combine the businesses and spin them into a new publicly traded company.

“We are in discussion with Baker Hughes on potential partnerships,” said a GE spokesman. “While nothing is concluded, none of these options include an outright purchase.”
