Oklahoma Sierra Club Worried About Issues in State Legislature Next Month

The Sierra Club of Oklahoma is gearing up for the start of the legislative session on Monday, Feb. 6 and leaders are already talking of “unfortunate” things they see developing among legislators.

Mark Derichsweiler, the Vice-Chair and Legislative chair of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club talked of them in a newsletter this week.

“Safe, renewable Oklahoma wind power is once again being singled out for ‘special treatment’ by our legislators and not in a good way,” declared Derichsweiler.

He also complained that efforts are underway to loosen up the siting standards for CAFOs or confined animal feeding operations that restrict where the giant pig factories are allowed to locate.

“This despite the overwhelming defeat of ‘Right to Farm’ by Oklahoma voters,” he added. “Proposed legislation is already shaping up to be a litany of bad news for environmental concerns if not stopped.”

Derichsweiler said other matters cry out for positive action.
“The issue of earthquakes continues to rage across our state and some politicians are taking aim at this problem via proposed legislation.”
