New Mexico Rancher Wonders About Future Following Decision on Methane Emissions Rule

A rancher in northwest New Mexico is preparing to resume his battle against methane gas being released by thousands of wells in the San Juan basin.

Don Schreiber was one of those who fought for the emissions rule that the Obama administration adopted but the Trump administration is in the process of eliminating.

He told his story recently to E and E Newswire, admitting he is unclear what the future will hold for his environmental fight.

“We get the three-year methane fight settled, and then the Trump administration knocks that out,” Schreiber says. “We go back and fight — like death fight — for six months, beat the CRA, and today they suspend the rule. So I have no idea what the response is.”

The Four Corners region features an estimated 18,000 wells under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management’s field office in Farmington, New Mexico. The district has more than 8,000 pump jacks and another 9,000 wellhead compressors.
