Disposal Well Opponents Organize to Wage a Fight in Flint Hills of Kansas

Opponents of a wastewater disposal well in the Flint Hills of Kansas say they won’t challenge a Kansas Corporation Commission approval of the well but plan to fight any others in the future.

Their fight concerned a well proposed near Strong City by Quail Oil Company. The well is also close to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

But future disposal well developers can expect a battle from residents of Morris and Chase counties.

“It’s our full intention to fight every one of them,” said Cindy Hoedel, a resident of the small community of Matfield Green. She fought the Quail Oil well but told the Kansas News Service and KCUR public radio it would be “fruitless” to appeal the ruling of the KCC.

Hoedel indicated she and her followers are reading local newspapers for public notices of more wastewater disposal wells. They are already fighting one well proposed near Hamilton in Greenwood County near Emporia.
