Rig Count Data Reveals 6 New Oklahoma Rigs, 9 Added to U.S.

Both Oklahoma and North America saw big jumps in rig counts in the past week according to figures released by Baker Hughes.

Oklahoma’s count jumped by six to reach 123. A year ago, the state had only 75 working oil and gas rigs.

Nationally, the count grew by nine, reaching 907 active rigs. The U.S. count is up 336 from 568 one year ago.

Canada’s count also jumped by 11 in the past week, rising to 203 from 176 just a year ago.

Of the active oil and gas states, Kansas added two to reach 41, according to the Red Top Rig Report. While making a steady comeback, Kansas is running slightly short of the 50 active rigs it had working a year ago. Texas dropped by two to hit 442. New Mexico’s count grew by four to reach 69.

Oklahoma’s Cana Woodford play had the most growth for the week, adding seven to reach 73 working rigs. The Cana Woodford play has almost doubled the number of active rigs since a year ago this time.

The Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico remains the nation’s biggest oil and gas play with 386 active rigs, an increase of six in the past week. A year ago, there were 218 rigs in the Permian Basin. The Eagle Ford in south Texas grew by two to reach 67. Last year, the Eagle Ford had 38 active rigs in early November.
