Heat blast leaves its mark in southwest Oklahoma

The heat blast that worried electric producers in the South and Southwest left its mark on Oklahoma this week as one town in southwest Oklahoma hit an early heat index of 113.
It was in the Tillman County town of Grandfield and the 113 heat index, according to Oklahoma Mesonet Climatologist Gary McManus, was the highest heat index seen in Oklahoma in nearly a year. It was Sept. 6, 2023 when Idabel and Broken Bow hit 115 and 114 heat indexes respectively
The heat index in Grandfield rose in part because of high humidity but McManus indicated the coming days won’t see similar high levels of humidity. However—there’s always a however…
“But we will still see highs flirting with 100, and heat indexes flirting with 105+.”
