Volatile Yukon City Council meeting over data center project

Another emotion-filled city council meeting was held this week in Yukon where a contentious fight is underway over a proposed data center.

Residents again made their arguments heard Tuesday evening as they packed the Yukon City Council chambers and spoke against the project, with one person even comparing the city leadership to a Nazi regime.

“I voted for Pillmore, and I regret that vote more than anything probably I’ve ever done in my life because this feels like some nazi regime,” said the city resident in reference to Mayor Brian Pillmore who was absent from the meeting.

Others made more threats of a recall petition which is being circulated in Yukon.

“We will collect those signatures within 30 days, and we’re gonna remove you,” vowed one resident.

The council continues examination of how to deal with meeting water demands of the project and one of the options would be the purchase of 2 million gallons a day from Oklahoma City. Costs could run up to $200 million. The planned data center would use 3 million gallons a day in the cooling of its servers.

One consideration is offering 3-million gallons a day of non-potable water but it has a nearly $56 million cost and would also require construction of 3.5 miles of 18-inch pipe, reported Fox 25 News.

Council member Rick Cacini said his focus is on residents’ needs rather than industrial users.“We had water problems 8 years ago when I started, and we have water problems today.”
