Hot deadly weather hitting Oklahoma

Take a good look at the picture showing the impact of high temperatures and humidity this week and next week in Oklahoma.

Durant will feel the pain as “feels like” temperatures reach 109 degrees. Stillwater tops that with an expected heat index of 111 degrees.

It has the potential to harm outdoor workers—oilfield employees, highway construction crews, utility workers, construction laborers, farmers and more.

State Climatologist Gary McManus with the Oklahoma Mesonet says cooler weather isn’t coming soon.

Some areas of Oklahoma are likely to experience heat indices of 100 degrees or more for the next 30 days. It’s also clear the western areas of the state will be the hottest in the next several days. Southwest Oklahoma will experience the hottest weather.

McManus told his readers this week, sorry but there won’t be any relief from the heat coming anytime soon.

The large heat blast hitting Oklahoma and other states in the central part of the U.S. prompted an Energy Emergency Alert issued Monday afternoon.

SPP is issuing an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3 (EEA3) for the West SPP Balancing Authority Area (BAA), effective until further notice.

  • Individuals should contact their local utility for details specific to their area.
  • SPP generation and transmission operators have been provided instructions on applicable procedures, including reporting any limitations, fuel shortages or concerns.
  • SPP will send additional information if necessary.

SPP’s East BA area is under a Resource Advisory (normal operating conditions) through an anticipated end time of Tuesday, July 21, at 12:00 a.m. CT.  Find a map of SPP’s East and West BA areas below:
