As Oklahoma gained in its rig count in the past week with the addition of one more rig, the growth came in the popular western part of the state where most of the state’s oil and gas drilling is underway.
The Granite Wash, the play that extends into the eastern few counties of the Texas Panhandle, added a rig from the previous count of rigs released by Baker Hughes Co. There were 20 rigs reported in the GW, up from the prior week.
Located within the Anadarko Basin, the Granite Wash in Oklahoma is primarily located in Beckham, Roger Mills and Washita counties. If you’re unfamiliar with the counties, the region is around the cities of Sayre, Cheyenne and Cordell.
It puts the Granite Wash with the same count of 20 rigs as in the Cana Woodford play. Both plays have seen neck and neck numbers over the past several months.
No other changes in the state’s oil plays were reported. The Ardmore Woodford remained at 2 rigs, same as the previous week. The Arkoma Woodford also continued with one active rig. The Mississippian went still another week with no reported drilling activity, based on the Baker Hughes Rig Count.
Nation’s drilling activity
The Permian Basin, where some Oklahoma energy companies are active, increased its count by 2 to reach a total of 265 rigs breaking the horizon in the reaches of western Texas and southeast New Mexico.
The Williston was unchanged at 27 rigs. The Haynesville, in eastern Texas and Louisiana, added 3 rigs for a total of 59. The Marcellus remained at 24 rigs and the Eagle Ford play was unchanged at 49.
The Utica continued with 11 rigs. The DJ basin in Colorado and Wyoming remained at 11 rigs as well. The Barnett play of north Texas reported one active rig.
