Drought grows in Oklahoma

As Oklahomans hope they are seeing the last of the 100-degree days this week, they also might be greeted with some rainfall which would perhaps lessen the growing drought across the state.

Rain is in the forecast for Thursday, and it couldn’t come soon enough as the U.S. Drought Monitor’s latest report shows drought conditions continuing to worsen in the state. Most of the western part of Oklahoma is in the two most severe categories measured by the Drought Monitor.

In the latest weekly report issued Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, nearly half the state, 40.73%, was in extreme or exceptional drought, according to U.S. Drought Monitor. That was up from 39.97% the previous week.
