Cushing inventory is growing

Slowly, the Cushing Hub in northern Oklahoma is gaining more crude oil for storage in its massive tanks that dot the countryside around the city of Cushing.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest inventory report showed the hub gained more than 1.8 million barrels of crude oil to reach a total of 26,607 million barrels of oil. as of the end of October 9. The latest total compared to 24,745 million barrels reported the week ending October 2. It represented a gain of 1,862 million barrels.

A month ago, Cushing’s inventory was down to 21,824 million barrels. In July, the inventory fell to about 18 million barrels of crude oil. The July EIA report stated that Cushing stocks dropped from 19,370,000 barrels ending the week of July17 to 18,599,000 barrels the week of July 24. It was a decline of nearly 771,000 barrels, according to the EIA’s Weekly Petroleum Status Report for July 2026. It was considered the lowest storage level at the West Texas Intermediate delivery hub since 2014. The new level also brought crude stocks close to critical “tank bottom” operational minimums

The gain of the Cushing inventory came as the nation’s total in oil inventory fell in the most recent report. Crude oil inventories in the United States saw a decrease of 8.6 million barrels during the week ending October 9, according to new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released on Thursday. The decrease brings commercial stockpiles to 415.6 million barrels, according to government data, which is now 3% above the five-year average for this time of year.
