Western Oklahoma oil and gas plays jockey for most drilling activity

Oklahoma’s two most active oil and gas plays continue to go back and forth when it comes to the total of rigs actively seeking more production.

The most recent Baker Hughes Rig Count showed the state with a loss of one rig, leaving 51 still pursuing more oil and more gas.

The Granite Wash play has taken over leadership with a total of 20 rigs while the Cana Woodford count fell from 20 rigs to 19.

Other plays continued with the same numbers. The Ardmore Woodford stayed at 2 active rigs and the Arkoma Woodford still had only one rig reported to be drilling.

The Mississippian went another week with no reported activity.

While the nation saw a gain of 6 oil rigs but a drop of one gas rig, the Permian is where there is expanded drilling activity. It saw a gain of 4 rigs to reach a total of 274, as of the most recent Baker Hughes Rig Count.

Next highest was the Haynesville which covers all of Louisiana and parts of East Texas.  It had a reported total of 57 with an increase of one over the past week.

The Eagle Ford in South Texas, the region where Crescent Energy just acquired Devon Energy’s assets in a $4.2 billion deal, had an unchanged rig count of 49.

The Williston in North Dakota and eastern Montana was unchanged at 35 active rigs. The Marcellus, North America’s largest and most productive natural gas field in the northeast, remained at 23. Two plays, the D-J Basin in Colorado and southern Wyoming and the Utica in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, remained at 10 rigs.
