Nickel refinery operator backs out of deal in Lawton

Two years after breaking ground for a proposed nickel refinery in Lawton, Westwin Elements is backing out of the deal.

It recently notified Lawton city leaders it will not be building a larger commercial plant after building a small-scale operation. The Lawton Constitution reported the Lawton Economic Development Authority approved a joint resolution with the City and Comanche County Industrial Development Authority confirming Westwin’s notice.

The board also agreed to end all of its obligations under a redevelopment agreement between the city, the development authority and the Industrial Development Authority.

Westwin announced in June it had obtained its first binding commercial agreement. It called the deal a “milestone seven-year sales and purchase agreement” with Golden Age Free Zone Establishment, a subsidiary of Apex Group-Turkiye.

Westwin leaders said at the time they intended to be ready to announce the location of their commercial refinery during the summer.
