Long wind turbine blade caused traffic shutdown

Those wind turbine blades pulled across highways and roads across wind-producing states such as Oklahoma and others in the Midwest are certainly awe-inspiring, but one of them brought traffic to a halt at one Oklahoma City interstate interchange on Monday.

The truck towing the single blade couldn’t quite make the turn on the ramps of I-35 and I-240 and as a result, the crash resulted in the shutdown of the interchange for a few hours.

The Department of Transportation announced the interchange was reopened within a few hours. KOCO TV News reported that crews secured the blade and cleared the scene. The TV station offered an aerial view of the mishap.

Some wind turbine blades can be a record more than 500 feet in length, but most range in length from 120 to 215 feet. The medium sized turbines have blades between 215 and 275 feet and are commonly used for community power generation.
